Journalism During Turbulent Times

COVID-19 has changed the world in so many ways. With the world changing so rapidly, journalism needs to adapt and change with it. With everything going on right now, a pandemic, rising social justice movements throughout the United States, and a presidential election, journalism is needed now more than ever. Journalists have a duty to the people to share the news, because without journalism, we would be in the dark.

Journalism had to adapt to COVID-19. Interviews happen over Zoom, or you use a six foot long boom mic, you wear a mask when field reporting, or in the newsroom. Journalism has also changed in the way we report on COVID-19. With this virus there are/were many ways the media can go wrong with reporting about it. Journalists had to change the way they report to work around these issues.

Journalism has stuck to its core values though. It is a journalists job to report what is happening in the world to the people. Journalists are still doing that. A great example of that is the reporting on the University of Minnesota medical student who defaced the George Floyd Memorial. This is something that is reported on well. Journalists told the world of this story, and it incites change into the world.

Journalists should always be respectful and never cause harm in their work. The goal of a journalist is to be unbiased when reporting the news or retelling an event. Journalism is ultimately telling a story to people. Journalists can share their opinions/experiences through opinion editorials. This is a great way to share your experience and tell your story.

I think the journalist Joey Peters did an amazing job reporting on the medical student who defaced the George Floyd Memorial. He told the story through the eyes of a fellow medical student Bryan Leyva, and it was beautifully written.
